In this subject I am not recommending we put all our group funds into various charities, merely that perhaps we could look into the possiblity of using our Twinning Links to help some of the poorer and less fortunate communities of the world.

Many Twinning Associations have a third world link in which they can help with various projects, particularly with such matters as Education or Medical Facilites for disadvantaged youngsters.

One of very many charities working in this field, particularly in Africa is Cameo-aid a group working to assist and alleviate suffering in parts of Africa.

One way in which we could help these communities is by utilising our existing links in a common project, perhaps by adopting a small town or village which requires help, this would not only give us a new target and perspective in our activities but also bringing our joint committees into a new and proactive partnership, which is surely what a partnership is all about, cooperation.

In this post I have mentioned only one charity and one country, Africa, but there are very many charities and countries needing some sort of assistance and a quick websearch of charities involved in the countries of your choice should give you plenty of ideas and information of suitable target communities.

This sort of activity is obviously not suitable for all of us, but for those who are looking for a new direction or addition to your twinning activites could find themselves involved in a very rewarding and satisfying postition.

Why not browse some of the website links in our "Find you local group section" and you will find many examples of groups who have decided to use their resources in a proactive way.

Hi Alan,

At the Exeter/Yaroslavl Twinning Association we have always spent a great amount of time raising funds for humanitarian aid to those in less fortunate in our twin city of Yaroslavl, Russia.

Even now many Russian social support systems are still not yet in place so we do our best to help out. We raise an average of about £1,500 per year to help plug the gap, but it is nowhere enough. 10 times that would just about scratch the surface. One thing we guarantee our members is that every penny raised goes directly to the recipients with no overheads or admin costs.

This year we have given money to The Children's Department of the Yaroslavl Psychiatric Hospital to pay for an occupational therapist, paid for two of their staff to visit the UK in July to see how things are done here, and provided money for a group of Yaroslavl churches to help with providing much needed cancer treatment drugs for the poorest in their parishes.

Even though we are only a small organisation we do our best, and hope that other twinners will do the same.

Regards,

Nick
